HO-CHUNK CAPITAL'S MASTER PLANNED COMMUNTY FLATWATER CROSSING WINS URBAN DESIGN AWARD SIOUX CITY, IA - Ho-Chunk Capital's Flatwater Crossing master planned community was honored by the Nebraska Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA Nebraska) with the 2015 Urban Design award, announced Dennis Johnson, CEO of Ho-Chunk Capital. Ho-Chunk Capital is a subsidiary of Ho-Chunk, Inc., the award-winning economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. The APA Nebraska Urban Design award honors the efforts to create a sense of place, whether a street, public space, neighborhood or campus effort. The award is based on originality and innovation in addressing needs, compatibility in supporting planning goals of the community, effectiveness and results in making a difference in the lives of community members, and engagement in collaborating with public interests and leaders. Flatwater Crossing is a master planned community located along the Missouri River in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Ho-Chunk Capital worked with HDR, an architecture, engineering, planning and consulting firm headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska on the project. Johnson said, "We wanted Flatwater Crossing to be a walkable urban neighborhood, offering residents a vibrant community intertwined with a network of trails, greenways, public plazas, natural landscaping, wildlife, and river views. We are honored that the APA Nebraska recognized Flatwater Crossing, HDR and Ho-Chunk Capital with its Urban Design award." "Flatwater Crossing is an embodiment of the APA NE Urban Design Award - it is a pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use neighborhood, with multiple housing typologies, that is designed to embrace the natural environment with a street and open space system that provides direct pedestrian and bicycle linkages from its various neighborhoods to the vibrant village center and the Missouri River Greenway," said Douglas J. Bisson, Community Planning and Design Manager, HDR. Johnson added that Flatwater Crossing will be opening in stages beginning in 2016, and will have a mix of apartments, townhomes, cottages, village homes, standard homes, and estate homes, as well as a Village Center for retail, restaurants and office space. ### The mission of Ho-Chunk, Inc. is to provide long-term economic self-sufficiency and job opportunities for the Winnebago Tribe.
