HO-CHUNK, INC. SUBSIDIARY, HCI CONSTRUCTION
HONORED AT 2007 EXCELLENCE IN CONCRETE AWARDS

WINNEBAGO, Nebraska -- HCI Construction, a subsidiary of Ho-Chunk, Inc., has been recognized at the 2007 Excellence in Concrete Awards for their work in the state of Iowa. The awards were announced November 1, 2007 at a ceremony in Ames, Iowa hosted by the Iowa Ready Mix Concrete Association (IRMCA).

The Excellence in Concrete Awards recognizes outstanding projects from throughout the state of Iowa in several categories. The awards are presented each November at Iowa State University’s Better Concrete Conference. Entries are judged on a number of criteria, including: architectural design, project complexity and individuality, engineering challenges, difficulty of construction, workmanship, and use of ready mix concrete.

HCI Construction was named for the construction of the Alliance Concrete Ready Mix Plant in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, which opened in June 2007, and was honored in the Commercial Above-Grade Buildings category at the awards ceremony. HCI Construction was nominated for the award by Alliance Concrete, Inc. of Orange City, Iowa, the customer and concrete supplier for the project. In addition to HCI Construction and Alliance Concrete, Inc., others cited for their work on the project were Lite-Form Technologies, for the form system used in the project and KC Engineering Co. as building engineer.

“HCI Construction is indeed honored to be recognized for our work as General Contractor and  team leader on this award-winning project,” said Tom Koob Construction Manager for HCI Construction.   “As a seasoned general contractor, HCI Construction has worked hard to ensurethat we have the right staff to facilitate the bringing together of people and materials seamlessly on a project.  Our comprehensive approach builds trust and delivers results on projects ranging from the simple to the more complex,” Koob said.

The plant utilizes a tilt-up wall panel system from Lite-Form Technologies to create panels that are  up to 60 feet tall and 12 feet wide, weighing 88,000 lbs. The roof system for the plant utilizes  ” Lite-Deck”, a foam form with steel embeds to anchor to the wall panels. “I believe the greatest factor in making this project an award winner, is the ‘uniqueness’ of the construction of the building,” said Keith Kilpatrick, Contruction Manager for HCI Construction. “The on-site construction utilizes new tilt up panel technology pioneered by Lite-Form, which makes it possible to produce panels during the winter, casting on-site also saves on delivery cost and eliminates scheduling problems,” Kilpatrick said.

The same new technology is also being used on another HCI Construction project, the $30 million Bison Renewable Energy project in Sioux Center, Iowa. The project is currently the largest methane plant in the U.S., utilizing integrated leading edge technologies to generate renewable sources of biogas (natural gas) while extending benefits to local communities through manure and waste management solutions. The project consists of thirteen one million gallon concrete digester tanks and five buildings with approximately 86,000 square feet.

Other projects with which HCI Construction is currently involved include the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, Gavins Point Dam for the U.S. Corps of Engineers at Yankton, South Dakota, the National Park Service at Beatrice, Nebraska and the base hospital at Offutt Air Force Base for the U.S. Corps of Engineers.

An SBA Certified 8(a) and HUBZone company, HCI Construction currently has 90 employees, with offices located in South Sioux City, Nebraska, corporate headquarters in Winnebago, Nebraska and an office in Bellevue, Nebraska.

HCI Construction is one of seventeen subsidiaries of Ho-Chunk, Inc., the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, whose mission is to develop long-term economic growth for the Tribe through the creation of business enterprises and jobs. The corporation employs over 500 persons in eight states and two foreign countries.
