Winnebago, NE. -- Ho-Chunk, Inc., (HCI) the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has renewed a scholarship program for students who are planning on attending a 2-year or 4-year educational or technical institution this fall. The Ho-Chunk, Inc. Higher Education Program is designed to encourage the education and career development of Winnebago Tribal members or those of documented Winnebago descent. The program is open to all qualified applicants living either on or off the Winnebago Indian Reservation.
In renewing the program, Annette Hamilton, HCI Vice President of Operations commented: “In keeping with HCI’s mission to provide job opportunities and develop economic self-sufficiency for the Winnebago Tribe, the HCI Higher Education Program will identify and help nurture future leaders of our community by furthering their education today. HCI is pursuing several initiatives to develop long-term benefits for the Tribe including the Junior Achievement Program in the Winnebago schools, the Higher Education Program and a summer internship program to benefit Winnebago college students.”
The HCI Higher Education program will reward three successful applicants with up to a $1,000 each per year over a two-year period to offset educational expenses. The scholarships will be awarded through an application process directly administered by Ho-Chunk, Inc. These three scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity to be employed on a part-time basis with an HCI owned company during the course of the program.
Following successful completion of the scholarship/employment program and a degree, the recipient will be offered an opportunity for a full time job with Ho-Chunk companies to explore career advancement within the corporation.
Successful candidates for any of these three scholarships must complete an application form and essay, furnish letters of reference, have maintained a minimum GPA and have satisfied other requirements in the program. The application deadline for the 2008-09 school year is May 2, 2008.
