PBS SERIES, “NATIVE AMERICAN ENTREPRENEURS”
FEATURES HO-CHUNK, INC. AND WINNEBAGO TRIBE
WINNEBAGO, NEBRASKA – Ho-Chunk, Inc. (HCI) was profiled on “Native American Entrepreneurs,” a series of programs produced by “Nightly Business News” that recently aired on PBS. The series focuses on Native Americans making a difference in the business world and is a companion piece to “We Shall Remain,” a multi-part prime-time series publicized as the definitive, multi-media history of Native Americans from PBS’s American Experience that premiered April 13th.
The segment on Ho-Chunk and the Tribe discusses the vision, strength of purpose and willingness to take on risk that Native American entrepreneurs, like all entrepreneurs must have. The program characterizes the Winnebago as a tribe that is forging its own entrepreneurial path, running many successful business ventures.
The program highlights the establishment of Ho-Chunk, Inc. by tribal elders nearly 15 years ago because of declining gaming revenues and the need to provide long-term economic development and jobs through the creation of a wide variety of businesses by HCI.
The program features an interview with John Blackhawk, Winnebago Tribal Chairman who speaks about the beginnings of HCI and the positive changes that entrepreneurial development have brought about in the community as he walks through the Ho-Chunk Village.
Also interviewed during the program is Annette Hamilton HCI Chief Operating Officer. “I think it's important to create entrepreneurship, to continue the spirit of self-sufficiency and taking care of yourself and taking care of your own future and creating your own destiny. And I think every tribe really feels that need,” Hamilton said during the interview.
“Being featured in the “Native American Entrepreneurs” program is something we can all be very proud of,” said Lance Morgan, CEO of HCI. “This program not only demonstrates to others across the nation that we have the ability to succeed in business, but it says that we are working hard to make a difference in our people’s lives, and are willing to take the risks that are necessary to provide a brighter future for our children,” Morgan concluded.
The “Native American Entrepreneurs” program aired on PBS on three consecutive Mondays starting on April 13, 2009. The “Native American Entrepreneurs” program segment featuring Ho-Chunk, Inc. and the Tribe can be viewed in its entirety online at:
